Apelido antigo, patronímico de Diogo, isto é, começado a usar por alguém cujo pai teve esse nome próprio, pelo que se terão formado várias famílias não só em Portugal como em espanha, onde conheceu a forma de Diez, e de onde alguns assim chamados passaram a Portugal, usando, contudo, escudo diferente deste : de azul, com um sol de ouro de dez raios, as quais ainda hoje se vêm num dos solares deste apelido em Tondela. Os Reis de Armas deram-nas, mais tarde, indistintamente a outros Dias que se distinguiram ao serviço do reino e merecendo, por isso, dos nossos soberanos Cartas de Brasão de Armas. Entre elas, as concedidas em 4.3.1752 a Manuel Passos Dias, Cavaleiro da Ordem de Cristo; em 18.12.1819 a António Moreira Dias,Cavaleiro da mesma Ordem, filho de outro do mesmo nome e também Cavaleiro de Cristo; em 17.4.1820 a joaquim Inácio Moreira Dias, cavaleiro
