Alcuni scrittori credono questa famiglia diramazione della Gualandi di Pisa, altri che avesse preso il nome dalla Terra di Somma presso il Monte Vesuvio; ed altri ancora la ritengono quella famiglia Spinelli, la quale, sovente, era detta "de Summa" per aver possedimenti feudali presso l'anzidetta terra di Somma. Sta di fatto che fin dal 1239 Federico II imperatore, diede a custodire due ostaggi Lombardi: Oberto e Percivalle, ai baroni di Picerno e Saponara; ed è, quindi, più attendibile opinione che questi portassero dalla Lombardia, nel Regno di Napoli, tale famiglia, opinione espressa anche dallo storico Aldimari. E però, nell'anno 1307, trovasi Nicola di Somma già investito nel Regno di Napoli dell'importante ufficio di consigliere e maestro razionale. Da questa epoca non si perde più traccia della famiglia, con personaggi continuamente in possesso di alti uffici e dignità, con uomini illustri per valore nelle scienze e nelle armi.
