Famiglia astigiana, salita rapidamente ad altissimi onori. E' fra le famiglie piemontesi la più largamente titolata. Figura in Asti, dove ebbe più tardi il palazzo già de Catena, dal secolo XVI, con Nicolò, padre di Girolamo e avo di Giambattista e Nicolò, ai quali l'appalto delle polveri, dei grani e delle vettovaglie in tempi di guerra guerreggiata procurò larghe ricchezze. Con Nicolò, figlio di Gerolamo, ha inizio la titolatura nobiliare della famiglia, per le infeudazioni di Rivalta (1613) e di Quarto e Portocomaro (1618) con titolo comitale. Il conte Nicolò, che aveva dotata la cappella della SS. Annunziata in S. Tommaso di Torino (1604), morì in questa città il 3 luglio 1623; e Carlo Emanuele I, scrivendo al principe di Piemonte l'8 luglio di quell'anno, ne fa menzione così: "Il general di Finansse è morto in due giorni d'infirmità che ci à fatto stupir tutti poiché era ancora giovane".
