Na época dos carolíngios, os "missi dominici" eram oficiais reais encarregados de supervisionar, nas cidades italianas sujeitas à soberania dos Alpes, as instituições e magistrados a quem era confiada a administração da justiça; o atributo desse cargo ocupado por algum membro da família foi repassado aos descendentes que o adotaram como patronímico. Em Tortona a Girolinus (provavelmente Girolimo, Gerolamo) De D. foi eleito cônsul em 1158, época em que a cidade se erguia das ruínas de 1155; Guglielmo é testemunha em ato de 30 de agosto de 1210 referente a uma doação de trigo ao mosteiro de Rivalta; em 1235, Enrico era cônsul da justiça e, em 6 de janeiro, participou da nomeação de Lantelmo di Casei como procurador do município de Tortona pela paz com Gênova, confiando o mesmo à escolha dos árbitros nas questões de Tortona; o mesmo notário e credor palatino, em 7 de agosto de 1241,
