Antichissima e distinta famiglia, originaria dell'Altino, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Si rifugiò nelle lagune venete per le incursioni dei Goti ed ancor prima della serrata del Maggior Consiglio, del 1297, sostenne dignità nello stato della Repubblica. Chiuso il detto Consiglio vi rimasero compresi fra i patrizi; d'indi in poi tre dogi, quattro procuratorati di San Marco, patriarchi di Aquileia, di grado e di Venezia, cardinali, vescovi e generali da mare illustrarono sempre più questo casato, il quale si divise in parecchi rami, di cui uno dei suoi maggiori di nome Andrea fu, nel 1434, dall'imperatore Sigismondo creato Cavaliere e Conte Palatino, e viene comunemente chiamato D. dalle Rose in causa che uno dei suoi progenitori, Antonio, fu fatto solennemente cavaliere nella basilica vaticana da Sisto V nel 1476 e fregiato dello special dono della Rosa d'Oro.
