Il Galluppi vuole che questa illustre famiglia sia stata portata in Messina da Raniero Donato, figlio di Sinibaldo e nipote di Corso Donato. D'altronde, tal famiglia, nel dispiegarsi dei lustri, sempre è riuscita a produrre una serie di uomini che resero illustre il suo nome, nei pubblici impieghi, nelle professioni liberali ed ecclesiastiche e nel servizio militare. Un Tommaso fu giudice straticoziale di Messina negli anni 1507-8, 1510-11, 1522-23; un dottor Francesco fu sindaco di Messina nel 1741-43; un Antonino fu console nobile del mare in detta città nel 1745-46; un Saverio, barone dell'ufficio di portulanotto di Girgenti, fu primo barone di Migliardo in sua famiglia, come figlio di Beatrice Campagna; baronia che all'abolizione della feudalità troviamo in potere del figlio di lui, Stefano Donato, per investitura del 18 dicembre 1797.
