Antica ed assai nobile famiglia spagnola, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Europa e del mondo. Secondo quanto ci viene tramandato, essa ha avuto la propria culla in Italia da donde poi si è portata in Spagna e da cui un ramo ha fatto infine ritorno in Italia, insediandosi nel milanese. Leggenda e araldica si fondono infatti in una mitica origine toscana della casata ed anzi vuolsi che essa si sia originata quale diramazione del nobile casato Doni di Pistoia, i cui esponenti ottennero nella propria patria, tra il 1469 e il 1529, per otto volte il priorato. Si narra infatti che, per sfuggire alle consuete e sanguinose dispute tra Guelfi e Ghibellini, un ramo dei Doni si portò in Spagna, tra il XV ed il XVI secolo, mutando anche il proprio cognome, al fine di affrancarsi dalla casata di origine.
