Questa famiglia ebbe origine dai conti di Marsi. Prese nome dalla Signoria di Dorrello, posseduta da' signori di Malanotte. Dai Conti di Marsi discesero molte famiglie illustrissime, le quali tutte presero nome dal feudo che ognuna di loro possedeva, come la Sangro, la Celano, la Balbana, l'Agone ed altre molte. Ha goduto nobiltà nelle città di Benevento dal 1112, Palermo, Noto ed Oliverto. Si vedono monumenti di questa famiglia in Napoli, nella Chiesa del Gesù. La famiglia ebbe parecchi contadi tra i quali quello di Agone, Lesina e Marsico. Inoltre strinsero parentela con famiglie molto illustri, tra le quali quelle degli Aldimari, degli Ansalone e dei Pirri. Tra i personaggi più illustri ricordiamo Landolfo, valoroso guerriero 1112; Mario Contestabile di Sicilia, sotto Guglielmo il Malo. Congiurò con Riccardo dell'Aquila Conte di Fondi, Ruggero Conte della Cerra, Gilberto Conte di Gravian ed altri principali Baroni, per dar morte al famoso ammiraglio
