Famiglia originaria dell'Umbria fin dal 1300 abita le proprie terre di Cesi. Le memorie documentali risalgono a Giovanni, capitano in Roma, e a Battista, dottore e letterato, nato nella prima metà del secolo XIV. Prospero, di Cesare, di Vittorio, di Mattia, di Battista, e di Anna Spada, figlia di Onorio Spada, creato conte dall'imperatore Carlo V nel 1533, dottore e diplomatico, riceveva da Ferdinando II imperatore, con chirografo segnato in Vienna il 24 marzo 1554, il titolo di conte palatino trasmissibile ai discendenti legittimi e naturali di ambo i sessi per continuata linea retta mascolina.
