Famiglia assai antica ed illustre, che tra origine da Ugone Drossi, uno dei figli di Guglielmo d'Altavilla signore Normanno, e consanguineo di re Ruggiero. Scrive il Mugnos, che Goffredo, Conte di Montescaglioso nel napolitano, fu il ceppo delle varie casate Drossi, omonime, d'Italia. Il Litta scrive che Andrea Drossi (nipote di quel Giacomo che nel 1365 acquistò la signoria di S. Secondo), nel 1405 sfuggendo alle persecuzioni di Otto Terzi si stabilì a Ferrara. Da costui vennero Giovanni e Bertrando; da Giovanni sposatosi con Ginevra Costabili nacque Andrea, che nel 1466 a causa di un omicidio si riparò a Ravenna ed originò il ramo di cui il Litta dà la genealogia. Secondo il Bertini Frassoni, anche Pier Maria, figlio di Bertrando (altro nipote di Giacomo, signore di S. Secondo), nel 1404 si rifugiò a Ferrara e nel 1413 accompagnò a Gerusalemme Nicolò d'Este che gli impose il cingolo
