Questa famiglia originaria di Siena, vanta antichissime tradizioni. Notizie esatte e documentate si hanno sugli albori del 1200 allorchè Angelo fu ambasciatore presso Urbano IV e Martino fu nominato Rettore dei Cassinesi nel 1286; Ghino, valoroso capitano veniva nel 1326; Negro fu cavaliere di S. Giovanni e morì in Rodi nel 1330. I Ghini tentarono di avere la Signoria di Volterra, ma furono debellati dai Pannocchieschi, allora potentissimi in Siena. Dimotisalvo unitamente al compagno d'armi Lamberto Polentani, fu ucciso nella lotta, e la sua famiglia, non potendo più trovar quiete in patria, nel 1430 abbandonò Siena per rifugiarsi in Romagna e precisamente nella diocesi di Rimini, ove ebbe il feudo di Roccabernarda. Successivamente dimorò a Roncofreddo ed a Longiano, finchè si stabilì definitivamente in Cesena, ove fu aggregata al ceto patrizio nel 1654.
