Antica ed assai nobile famiglia spagnola, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni europee, con maggiori insediamenti in Portogallo e in Italia. L'origine di questo cognome va ricercata nella cognominizzazione del nome medioevale "Durante", a sua volta, derivato dal celtico "Durum" con il significato di "forte e sicuro". Il nome ha origini cristiane ed indica durata e perseveranza nella fede. Secondo quanto ci viene tramandato, essa è originaria del nord della Spagna e, più precisamente, da Brieva de Cameros, nella regione nota come La Rioja. Molti dei suoi esponenti hanno provato la propria nobiltà nei militari Ordini di Santiago, Calatrava, Alcántara, Montesa, Carlos III e San Giovanni di Gerusalemme.
