Flämische Familie, die im 15. Jahrhundert von Brügge auf die Insel Faial überging und deren Spitzname Hurtere ist, von der in portugiesischen Schriften viele falsche Darstellungen zu finden sind, darunter Huerta, Huerter, Huter, Hutra, Dutra, Utra, Ultra, Dultra, Huertere, Hutre, Urtere, Hortere und Utrecht. Josse oder Joost oder Jobst de Hurtere oder van Hurtere, Bäcker, Fänger oder Sacker von D. Isabel, Herzogin von Burgund, Tochter des Königs von Portugal D. João I., war der erste, der den Kapitän oder die Donataria der Insel Faial und hatte In der Gnade des 21. Februar 1468 bevölkerte Infante D. Fernando, Neffe und Erbe von Infante D. Henrique, ihn und seine Nachkommen. Er war ein Ritter der Casa do Duque de Viseu, Infante D. Henrique. Die Hurteres waren Gouverneure und Herren des Landes Wynendael, eines Dorfes in Westflandern (Franc-de-Bruges). Vierhundert Fehden hingen von diesem Vermieter ab. Josse de Hurtere war der Sohn von Léo de Hurtere und Enkel eines anderen mit dem gleichen Namen. Mit ihm wurde sein Bruder Balduíno de Hurtere, sein Cousin António de Hurtere, an Faial, weitere Verwandte und Landsleute weitergegeben. Josse de Hurtere heiratete Brites de Macedo, eine Dienerin von D. Beatriz, Mutter von D. Manuel I., der Tochter von Jerónimo Fernandes. Aus dieser Ehe geht ein Teil der Utras hervor, wie andere von Josina de Hurtere, der Schwester (?) Von Josse de Hurtere, verheiratet mit Nuno Fernandes, und Balduino de Hurtere, ebenfalls Bruder.
