Flemish family that passed to the island of Faial in the 15th century, from Bruges and whose nickname of origin is Hurtere, of which are found many misrepresentations in Portuguese writings, noting Huerta, Huerter, Huter, Hutra, Dutra, Utra, Ultra, Dultra, Huertere, Hutre, Urtere, Hortere and Utrecht. Josse or Joost or Jobst de Hurtere or van Hurtere, baker, catcher or sacker of D. Isabel, Duchess of Burgundy, daughter of the King of Portugal D. João I, was the first to have the captaincy or donataria of the island of Faial and populated, at the mercy of February 21, 1468, that Infante D. Fernando, nephew and heir of Infante D. Henrique, made him and his descendants. He was a knight of the Casa do Duque de Viseu, Infante D. Henrique. The Hurteres were governors and lords of the land of Wynendael, a village in West Flanders (Franc-de-Bruges). Four hundred feuds depended on this landlord. Josse de Hurtere was the son of Léo de Hurtere and grandson of another of the same name. With him, his brother Balduíno de Hurtere, his cousin António de Hurtere, passed on to Faial, more relatives and countrymen. Josse de Hurtere married Brites de Macedo, a servant of D. Beatriz, mother of D. Manuel I, who was the daughter of Jerónimo Fernandes. From this marriage comes part of the Utras, as others come from Josina de Hurtere, sister (?) Of Josse de Hurtere, married to Nuno Fernandes, and Balduino de Hurtere, also brother.
