La famiglia è di antica nobiltà. Dalla Romagna passò nella Repubblica di S.Marino nel sec. XIII e dove fu assunta ai primi onori. Riconosce quale capostipite certo un Belluzzo, vivente nel 1253, che fu padre di Vignatolo. Sono poi da ricordare: Girolamo, di Simone, il quale nel 1461, inviato ambasciatore della Repubblica al cardinale di Teano, legato dal papa, concluse con questo una Lega contro Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta. Fu in grazia somma al gran Federico da Montefeltro, conte di Urbino, che lo chiama "Egregio Amico Carissimo"; fu assai ricco, e prestò più volte grano alla Repubblica e ad altri principi. Francesco, di Girolamo, ricoprì alte cariche. Simone, di Antonio, godé gran stima presso molti principi e presso i conterranei. Don Giovanni della Rovere, duca di Sora e prefetto di Roma, lo chiamava "Spectabili Viro Amico Praecipuo". Ospitò cardinali illustri.
