Antica ed illustre famiglia ascritta, sin dal 1466, all'ordine nobile di Padova, e riconosciuta per tale dal Senato Veneto nel 1627, confermata nel 1819. Nel 1826 ottenne la conferma del titolo di Conti Palatini conferitole nel 1469 dall'Imperatore Federico III re di Danimarca, figlio di Cristiano IV. Dichiarò guerra alla Svezia e dovette cederle alcune province in seguito alla Pace di Roskilde (1658). Col Trattato di Copenaghen (1660) ottenne la restituzione di parte dei territori perduti. A questa famiglia è, dunque, appartenuto il titolo di Conte, titolo che era solito essere dato dagli imperatori a coloro che erano al loro fianco. Da questi Conti si sceglieva coloro che venivano destinati a soprintendere agli uffizi del regio palazzo, ed altri erano mandati al governo delle provincie dell'impero ed a guardare i confini. Erano poi altri conti, estranei ai cennati uffizi, come quelli addetti all'annona, al commercio; ed anche i provveditori dell'esercito
