Antica famiglia, originaria di Salonicco, proveniente dal porto franco di Traila alle foci del Danubio, passata in Trieste, nel 1872, con i fratelli Jean Andrea e Demetrio Andrea Economo, i quali ivi trasferirono il centro dei loro affari, facendo del porto adriatico il capolinea di sbarco delle derrate di grano russo che le oro navi caricano nel Mar Nero. Una volta stabilitisi a Trieste investirono il loro capitale in una serie di iniziative industriali, del tessile alla chimica, non trascurando le imprese finanziarie ed assicurative della città. Con S.R.A. 16 giugno 1905 Giovanni Andrea Economo, padre dei detti Jean Andrea e Demetrio Andrea, ebbe la concessione del titolo di barone dell'Imp. Austriaco, con la discendenza di ambo i sessi ed un D.M.A. 6 nov. 1907 riconosce allo stesso Giovanni ed ai suoi discendenti il predicato di San Serff. Con D.M. 12 gennaio 1926 il suddetto titolo, predicato e stemma
