L'origine i questo nome è toponimica e trova ragione nel catalano Gual derivato dal latino Vadum (Dictionary of First Name). Famiglia molto antica originaria dell'isola di Mallorca dove già esisteva nel 1285 quando un Pedro Gual, deputato della città di Monturei, prestò giuramento e omaggio al re Don Alonso III de Aragona. Stessa distinzione meritò Salvador Gual, abitante della città di Muro, nel 1343, giurando fedeltà, al re Don Pedro IV de Aragona. Ramon Gual fu plenipotenziario, nel 1350 per la città di Mallorca, nell'ambasciata al re di Aragona. Ramon Gual Dezmur capitano nel 1552 nella guerra di Valdomosa combattè valorosamente con soli trentacinque uomini e sbaragliò cinquecento turchi che sbarcarono sulle coste di quella città. La famiglia ottenne privilegi di nobiltà, nel 1489, concessi dal re Fernando il Cattolico a Pedro Gual (El solar Catalan, Valenciano y Balear di Garcia Carraffa).
