L'origine remota della famiglia, come venne più spesso chiamata sino al secolo XVI, è a Lecco sul lago di Como. Da quella città la famiglia si stabilì in Brescia nel secolo XVIII; infatti nel 1274 compare per la prima volta quel cognome in un rogito del Monastero di S. Chiara coi figli di un Bonaventura; poi, nello Statuto detto dei Malesardi del 1292, compare Giovanni e infine è del 1316 il testamento di Pietro, fondatore della chiesa dei frati francescani in Rezzato, Distinti personaggi di qeusta famiglia figurarono nel secolo XIV e specialmente durante la signoria di Pandolfo Malatesta: Pietro, detto anche Perinus, è ufficiale alla corte di quel principe, come pure Giovanni, connestabile alle porte Bruciate e di S. Eufemia nel 1412. Alcuni storici opinano che il ramo bresciano della famiglia sia una derivazione di una famiglia de Manzonibus, pure originaria di Lecco, ove un altro ramo sarebbe rimasto
