La famiglia Imperiale risale, con documenti certi, al 1157. Nei secoli XII e XII si chiamò Tartano. Nel 1311, insieme ad altre famiglie nobili ora estinte, formò l'albergo Imperiale. A questo proposito, scrive il Serra nella sua Storia, vol. II, lib. V, pag. 254 che in occasione della venuta dell'imperatore Enrico di Lussemburgo, accolto entusiasticamente dai genovesi, "due famiglie superarono le altre in adulazioni: i Doria che pigliarono l'aquila per istemma, e i Tartano, che vollero quindi innanzi denominarsi imperiali". E' un altro storico, Giulio Pallavicino, osserva: "con poco senno i Tartano rinunciarono ad un nome già illustre per assumerne uno che li designò in seguito alle vendette dei guelfi, dai quali ebbero più volte le case incendiate e distrutte".
