Famiglia originaria della Sardegna, di antica e nobile tradizione, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. La cognomizzione è anteriore al XV secolo e dovrebbe derivare da forme aferetiche di toponimi sardi. Un Giorgio d'Ena, over Ena, e Lancilotto d'Epifania, gentiluomini Beneventani, furono mandati dal Re Alfonso nel 1420 Castellani, Giorgio del Castello di Leontini, e Lancillotto del Castello della Bruca con assai lucroso trattenimento. Giorgio si casò in Leontini con la figlia di Giovanni Timera, gentiluomo di quella Città, e procreò Nicolò Antonio, che militò a favore del medesimo Re, e del Re Cattolico Ferdinando, dal quale ebbe l'ufficio di Percettore della Valle di Noto, che vi durò pochi anni, impedito dalla morte, e lasciò fanciullo a Giovanni, il quale per alcune persecuzioni di politica divenne in bassa fortuna, lasciando i suoi figliuoli poveri, e così seguirono i posteri.
