Antica ed illustre famiglia originaria del Veneto. Un Jacopo è il primo di questa famiglia, che s'incontra a Venezia nel 1598. Lo segue, due anni dopo, il canonico di San Marco don Vincenzo Epis, il quale nel suo testamento benefica anche sua cugina Faustina fu moglie de m. Giacomo tentoretto el pittor. Un Giovanni di Epis veler, abitante in corte Colonne a Castello, aveva beni nella Bergamasca. Nel testamento di Giovanna, moglie del sior Anzolo Epis, la particella di, oppure de, viene per sempre omessa, come si legge nei lasciti del monaco Antonio, de Bergamasca del comun de Oneto. Dall'esame analitico dei documenti, risulta chiara la origine di questa famiglia, dedita più che altro ai lavori del commercio gionaliero delle vittuarie, la qual cosa è comprovata negli atti di Epis Catterina del 1615.
