Casa ilustre e antiga da Itália, que recebeu esse nome de Este, a terra da região de Paduan, onde foi seu domínio que se espalhou por Pádua, Ferrara, Modena e Reggio. Os primeiros nomes registrados pela história são os de Oberto I em 972 e Oberto II, que era o batente da Casa d'Este. Os Estensi mais ilustres foram: Azzo V marquês d'Este, que sequestrou Marchesella degli Adelardi, líderes do partido Guelph, e a entregou a Obizzo, seu pai. Para este rato, as imensas posses que ele possuía em Ferrarese, Romagna, na Marca d'Ancona entraram na casa de Este e as guerras entre os Estensi e os Torelli foram acesas, que durante cerca de dois séculos desolaram a parte da Itália.
