Very ancient and noble family, originally from Germany, where it was called von Etzbach. Among the first references, we find an act of 1570 in which a Reinart von Etzbach, son of Engelbert von Etzbach und dessen Gattin Adrian Crümmel von der Raaff acquires Langen, a noble house owned by the family in the Bentheim area. Subsequently we find references to this house at the court of Empress Maria Theresa of Habsburg and, probably, some of its members passed to the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza on behalf of the same.
