Secondo le Storie di Pistoia del Salvi, seguite da G. B. di Crollalanza nei "Cenni storici e genealogici della famiglia Fabroni", il capitano Mariotto, venuto dalla Francia in Italia con Carlo Magno, si accasò in Pistoia, ed ebbe in dono dall'imperatore il castello di Signa, tolto ai suoi discendenti, nel 1124, dalla Repubblica Fiorentina. Le discordie civili che divisero Pistoia, portarono, nel 1177, al bando dei Fabroni, e Piero di Matteo, con tre figli e pochi servi, presa la via del Mugello, si fermò nel lougo ove poi sorse Marradi. Dopo Montaperti, alcuni dei Fabroni tornarono in Pistoia, altri rimasero a Marradi, altri si stabilirono in Firenze; tra questi ultimi Segantino di Currado, commissario della Repubblica alla Lega di Cremona nel 1274, il quale fu ascritto alla cittadinanza fiorentina e autorizzato ad aggiungere la croce del popolo nello stemma di famiglia.
