Ancienne et très noble famille du Piémont, de vertu claire et ancestrale, répandue au cours des siècles dans diverses régions d'Italie. Originaire de la ville d'Asti, où il avait les titres d'expéditeur puis de comte de Cortandone et d'expéditeur de Monale et de Villafranca, une de ses branches a également prospéré à Cunico et il y avait le titre de seigneur de Colcavagno. La noblesse évidente de la famille est encore attestée par sa présence dans des ouvrages très précieux: "Le dictionnaire historique et blasonique des familles nobles et notables italiennes éteintes et florissantes", du généalogiste Giovan Battista di Crollalanza, publié à Pise en 1886 en trois volumes de plus de 1400 pages, et "Il Patriziato Subalpino" d'Antonio Manno. D'autre part, cette famille, au fil des décennies, a toujours réussi à produire une série d'hommes qui ont fait sa renommée, dans les emplois publics, dans les professions libérales et ecclésiastiques
