Fu originata da Salinguerra Torelli di Ferrara valoroso capitano, che cacciato dalla patria, perchè capo dei Ghibellini, si ritirò nel regno di Napoli ov'ebbe nobiltà, del pari che in Ferrara e in Sanseverino. Siccome dopo il suo esilio aveva assunto per impresa un'idra la cui più alta testa recisa portava il motto Fui, e sul collo tronco il motto Ero, volendo quasi significare che essendo stato egli signor di Ferrara vi sarebbe ritornato, così ne venne il cognome di questa famiglia Faiero e poi Folliero.
