Antichissimo e nobilissimo casato sorto dall'unione di due illustri ed aristocratiche prosapie: i Falcò di Spagna, anche conosciuti come Falco, de Falco o di Falco, e già presenti in Messina, Nicosia e Catania con titolo baronale, ed i Pio di Savoia. Le prime origini dei Pio si rinvengono nella consorteria feudale dei "Figli di Manfredo" da cui derivano anche le famiglie Pico, Papazzoni, Padelli, Azzolini e Fanti ed il loro capostipite vuolsi sia stato un Bernardo, figlio di Manfredo. Tal Bernardo fu padre di Pio, ricordato come cittadino di Modena nel 1168, podestà del comune (1177 - 1178) e rettore della Lega Lombarda ai congressi di Ferrara e di Parma per la pace con Federico Barbarossa.
