Cominciato da G.B. di Crollalanza e continuato poscia da suo figlio Goffredo, l'annuario della Nobiltà Italiana con il dizionario storico blasonico delle famiglie nobili italiane ci fà menzione di questa illustre famiglia, originaria del Piemonte. Comparisce con molto splendore frà la nobiltà piemontese questa casata, gli antenati della quale venuti già molti secoli prima in Piemonte, hanno con la loro riputatione apprestata ha discendenti loro onorata strada, trà le maggiori dignità della patria. Il titolo si legge nei primi sinodi diocesani; e così in quello del vescovo Pietro Giorgio Odescalchi, stampato ad Alessandria nel 1608. Pare che non possa riportarsi alle origini della sede nel 1175, per la lunga vacanza di due secoli, durata dal 1206 al 1405.
