La famiglia Fanesi è assai antica e nobile, originaria della Romagna. Annovera questa illustre casata personaggi di elevate virtù, derivata dalla potente famiglia dei Lambertazzi. Bittino nel 1280 diede ostaggi al Cardinal Legato; Rizzardo, soldato valoroso morì alla guerra santa nel 1291; Danese de Fanesi fu degli anziani nel 1285, e nel 1294 degli otto che governarono la città di Bologna; Giudocherio fu del consiglio dei due mila nel 1292; Antonio degli anziani nel 1323 e Giuliano nel 1350, e dopo di questi, molti altri della famiglia sostennero la stessa carica. Quest'ultimo fu pure castellano della rocca di S. Agata. Sante d'Andrea nel 1358 dottor di legge collegiato ed insigne lettor pubblico, fu del consiglio dei 400 nel 1374 ed ambasciatore al papa Gregorio XI e al March. di Ferrara nel 1377.
