La famiglia che é una delle più antiche dell'Umbria é ricordata fino dal 1438 con un tale Roscio i cui antenati erano Tomaso e Giovanni (1310). I suoi rappresentanti ebbero sempre parte cospicua nel nobile consiglio della loro patria. Chiusi e Sora ai tempi del pontefice Giulio II ebbero per vescovo Bartolomeo Farattini il quale ebbe anche la carica di vice legato nella Gallia Cispadana e nell'Umbria (1471-1533). Fra i familiari del duca Federico Sforza Visconti, é ricordato l'insigne giurista Placido Farattini (1490-1500) il quale fu pure onorato dal Pontefice della carica di nunzio al Re di Francia Carlo III, al sultano dei turchi e alla Serenissima Republica di Venezia. S. Pio V Ghislieri volle prefetto di Roma, preside di Romagna e vescovo di Lipari e di Amelia, Baldo Farattini (1500-1567). Lepido fu valente dottore e stabilitosi in Roma ottenne nel 1531 unitamente a Fulvio, suo fratello, valoroso giureconsulto, l'iscrizione
