Famiglia assai antica e nobile, originaria di Fontanile, poi in Casale Monferrato, Mantova e Alessandria; due rami di questa casata si propagarono nel territorio di Napoli e di Bari, i nomi dei suoi componenti si trovano soprattutto ricordati in contratti di acquisto di terre e case. Annovera questa illustre casata personaggi di elevate virtù, ma la penuria delle scritture in quegli antichi secoli ci priva di quelle curiosità più nobili, che si possono desiderare. Ebbe un cavaliere di Malta, Ferdinando, nel 1580, epoca in cui la famiglia figura già in alto stato. Si vuole il capostipite un Gian Matteo, da Fontanile, , padre di Ardizzino, capitano generale di giustizia a Casale nel XVI secolo. Il costui figlio Orazio fù investito con titolo signorile ialla fine del XVI secolo. Di questa famiglia non si hanno più notizie.
