Originalmente, esta familia se llamaba Romeggia de una posesión en el Municipio de Marano; y solo cuando llegó a establecerse en Bolonia en el siglo XIII asumió el apellido actual. El progenitor era un Urbano vivo en 1130. Hay un recuerdo de un Diatacora que participó en la cruzada desterrada por Honorio III en 1217 contra los turcos, señalándose a sí mismo por actos de valor; y en 1285, cuando la fama del estudio boloñés se había extendido por toda Europa, recordamos a un Oddo, un doctor en filosofía y medicina, que fue el primero en llamarse con este apellido. Esta conspicua familia participó en los eventos políticos de aquellos tiempos difíciles, militando en la facción Ghibellina, luego de sus afortunados eventos. Sin embargo, muchas personas de esta familia se dedican a estudios nobles y fructíferos del derecho. Hay noticias de un Guido que dejó un importante tratado de retórica.
