Algunos historiadores (Ganduccio, Recco, Buonaroti, etc.) creen que esta familia se deriva de una de las muchas ramificaciones de la familia Fieschi, condes de Lavagna, y se basan en un árbol genealógico de dicha familia Fieschi, presentado al Papa en 1253. Inocencio IV (Sinibaldo Fieschi) en el que una rama termina con un Guirardus y con esta anotación: "Aquo illi de sigestro descendunt". De hecho, de ciertos documentos parece que estos se originan en Sestri Levante, donde tenían pasiones y señorío en la llamada Isla de Sestri, que cedieron a la República de Génova el 22 de diciembre de 1430. Con el decreto del Senado en la misma fecha obtuvieron privilegios e inmunidades muy amplios. Después de eso se establecieron en Génova en relación con las familias Doria, De Mari, Salvago, Oldoini, etc. En 1586, tras la reorganización de la nobleza genovesa realizada por Andrea Doria en 1528, se inscribieron
