Antichissima famiglia, le cui prime notizie rimontano al 1283, nel quale anno tra i cavalieri di Butera troviamo un Guglielmo e tra i cavalieri di Mineo un Raynaldo. Un Federico Federico, di Sciacca, acquistò nel 1370 il feudo di Cefalà e forse fu egli stesso quel Federico che tenne l'eccelsa carica di pretore di Palermo nel 1367; un Antonino, per la moglie Antonella Imbeagna, possedette il diritto del grano sul caricatore di Sciacca; un Gaspare Federico e Balsamo fu giudice del tribunale della Gran Corte Criminale del Regno negli anni 1639-40-41, con privilegio dato a 30 maggio, esecutoriato a 15 settembre 1643, ottenne la carica di maestro razionale togato del tribunale del Real Patrimonio, e con privilegio dato a 23 luglio, esecutoriato a 15 settembre 1643, ebbe per sé e per i suoi la concessione del titolo di conte di San Giorgio; un Paolo fu senatore di Palermo negli anni
