Familias así apellidadas tuvieron su asiento en Navarra, y son originarias del linaje Barrema que tuvo casas solares en Guipúzcoa, Álava y Vizcaya. Una línea de estas casas fundó (como ya dijimos en la información del apellido Barrena), nuevo solar en la villa de Barbarín, del partido judicial de Estella (Navarra), y sus hijos se apellidaron F. Barrena. De dicho solar de Barbarín dimanaron Domingo y Diego F. Barrena, vecinos de Muniaín de la Solana y de Amescoa la Alta, lugares del partido judicial de Estella, que fueron reconocidos como hijosdalgo en 1703. De esa misma casa fueron descendientes Juan F. Barrena, vecino de Dicastillo, villa del repetido partido judicial de Estella, y Pedro F. Barrena, vecino de Campezo (Álava), que en 1794 solicitó de los Tribunales de Navarra le fuese declarada la nobleza de la que habían gozado sus ascendientes.
