Antigo patronímico de Fernando, usado desde remotas eras e que, como tal, originou diferentes famílias.O que mais remotamente se sabe ter tido Carta de Brasão foi Diogo Fernandes Correia, Feitor de D. João II na Flandres e Cavaleiro da sua Casa, ao qual o Imperador Maximiliano I da Alemanha, pelos muitos serviços que ele lhe prestara, concedeu em 1488, mercê de armas novas que El-Rei D.Manuel I lhe confirmou em 1509. Os Reis de Armas reconheceram-nas mais tarde a outros Fernandes que com ele não provaram parentesco, alterando a alguns metais e a ordem dos quartéis. Outros armoriais indicam como armas deste apelido um escudo de azul, com uma torre de ouro com seis bombardas, quatro saíndo das ameias e duas de cada lado da porta. Umas ou outras foram concedidas em 21.10.1789 a Jerónimo Martins Fernandes, Cavaleiro da Ordem de Cristo, de S.Paulo, Brasil; em 19.3.1870 a João Manuel
