Antico patronimico di Fernando, utilizzato fin dall'antichità e, come tale, diede origine a diverse famiglie, tra cui quella più remotamente nota per aver avuto uno stemma fu Diogo Fernandes Correia, fattore di D. João II nelle Fiandre e cavaliere di la sua Casa, alla quale l'Imperatore Massimiliano I di Germania, per i tanti servigi che gli aveva reso, concesse nel 1488, il favore di nuove armi che El-Re D.Manuel I gli confermò nel 1509. I Re d'Armi riconobbero successivamente li ad altri Fernandes che non dimostrarono parentela con lui, alterando alcuni metalli e l'ordine della caserma. Altri stemmi indicano come armi di questo cognome uno scudo azzurro, con una torre d'oro con sei bombarde, quattro uscenti dai merli e due ai lati della porta. L'uno o l'altro fu concesso il 21/10/1789 a Jerónimo Martins Fernandes, Cavaliere dell'Ordine di Cristo, di S.Paulo del Brasile; il 19/03/1870 a João Manuel Fernandes Feitosa,
