Já existia nos princípios do século XV o apelido F., mas ignora-se a sua origem, parecendo, contudo, ser da Beira, pois nesta província viveram os mais antigos que com ele se conhecem e aí se desenvolveu. Deve provir de alcunha e a pessao mais remota que o usou, de que há notícia, foi Álvaro Gonçalves F., morador em Viseu e casado com Branca Vaz da Costa. Deste casal foi filha Leonor ou Joana F., mulher de Vasco Pais de Castelo-Branco, de cujo matrimónio nasceram diversos filhos, que seguiram o apelido de Castelo-Branco. Parece que os Ferrões Castelos-Brancos provêm do referido consórcio. Vasco Pais de Castelo-Branco era filho de Vasco Pais Cardoso, alcaide-mor de Trancoso, senhor de Moreira e de Ervilhão, e de sua mulher D. Isabel Vasques de Castelo-Branco. Timbre: um leão de ouro.
