Antica famiglia originaria del castello di Ferragù in Scozia, trapiantata a Ferrara da Orazio I di Ferragù sul finire del secolo XIII. Stefano gentiluomo di camera di Ercole I. Francesco presidente del collegio dei Notai e scrittore di vaglia. Vuole il Viviano Marchesi G. nella sua "La Galleria dell'onore", edito in Forlì nel 1735, e con lui gli autori concordemente, essere questa una nobile ed antica famiglia originaria dell'Emilia-Romagna. Molti Scrittori hanno creduto, che questa famiglia intitolata di questo cognome sia un'istessa famiglia, e derivata da un medesimo stipite; e ciò a prima vista molti lo crederebbero, non solo per portare questa l'istesso cognome, ma ancora l'istessi nomi, e ne' medesimi secoli, che in vero ancora si vede derivare questa famiglia da una medesima stipite, che potrebbe essere ne' secoli antichi; ma per quanto si additano le Scritture si vede questa famiglia essere diversa dalle altre omonime.

D'azzurro semipartito e troncato da un filetto d'oro: nel primo a tre chiodi di nero, con la punta all'ingiù, impugnati; nel secondo alla torre di due palchi merlata nel primo palco di quattro merli e nel secondo palco di tre, alla ghibellina, aperta e finestrata di nero e sormontata da una cometa posta in banda nel canton destro del capo, il tutto d'oro; nel terzo a tre monti all'italiana, cuciti, di verde.
