Alte und sehr edle Familie des Königreichs der beiden Sizilien, ursprünglich aus Reggio Calabria, aber mit Zweigen in Kampanien, Apulien und Sizilien. Die Familie wurde am 31. Dezember 1594 in ihrem angestammten Adel bestätigt, während sie 1731 mit dem Marquis-Titel ausgezeichnet und zum Adel von Trani am Sitz des Erzbistums zusammengefasst wurde. Noch früher, im 14. Jahrhundert, hatte er in Sizilien den Adel genossen, und später besaß ein Nicolosio Ferrante, im Familiennamen, das Lehen von Ost-Gurafi, von dem sein Sohn Giovanni am 20. November 1453 die Investitur erhielt. Ein Camillo aus Reggio wurde 1594 mit dem Rang eines Diners und Mitglieds der königlichen Familie ausgezeichnet. Ein Zweig der Familie zog im 17. Jahrhundert nach Neapel. Am 2. Mai 1752 erlangte Matteo Ferrante, Leutnant der Kammer von Sommaria, den Besitz des Staates Ruffano in der Terra di Otranto, dem der oben erwähnte Marquistitel verliehen wurde, ein Staat, der neben Ruffano auch
