Ancienne et très noble famille du Royaume des Deux-Siciles, originaire de Reggio de Calabre mais avec des succursales en Campanie, dans les Pouilles et en Sicile. La famille fut confirmée dans sa noblesse ancestrale le 31 décembre 1594 tandis qu'en 1731 elle fut décorée du titre de marquis et agrégée à la noblesse de Trani, au siège de l'Archevêché. Encore plus tôt, au XIVe siècle, il avait joui de la noblesse en Sicile et par la suite un Nicolosio Ferrante, au nom marital, possédait le fief de Gurafi oriental, dont le 20 novembre 1453 son fils Giovanni obtint l'investiture. Un Camillo, de Reggio, fut décoré en 1594 du rang de dîneur et de membre de la famille royale. Une branche de la famille s'installe à Naples au XVIIe siècle.
