Familia antigua e ilustre, de clara y ancestral virtud, que fue rica en numerosas y vastas ramas, como las famosas dinastías de Nápoles y Capua, que gozaron de nobleza en esta última ciudad y que tenían sede propia en Nápoles; los Ferrara de Cosenza, que tenían títulos y feudos; los de Catanzaro, recibidos por justicia en la orden de Jerusalén en 1662; los de Terra d'Otranto, que aún ostentan el título de duque de Parabita. Las memorias de la familia Salernitano se pueden encontrar desde 1188, con un Giovanni, señor del castillo de Gragnano; otro Giovanni, entonces, fue un stratigoth de Salerno en 1265; Matteo, juez en 1275; Riccardo, enfeudado en 1383 del cargo de credentiere de la aduana de Salerno, y otros más. Se ramificaron en Eboli, Altavilla, Cava, Giffoni, Lettere, Olevano sul Tusciano, Rivelli y Tramutola. Poseían los feudos de Lagopiccolo, Silvi, Loquino, Dentiferro, Castiglione, Improsta.
