Antica ed assai nobile famiglia Italiana, di chiara ed avita virtù, conosciuta come Ferrari, Ferraris o de Ferraris, oriunda da Genova e da Milano, ma residente in Brignano, Torino ed Alessandria, fregiata del titolo di Marchesi di Brignano e Frascata. In Genova la famiglia è presente sin dal secolo decimo secondo. Un Ansaldo ed un Oliviero Ferrari giurarono la pace con Pisa nel 1188. Ugo fu degli otto nobili del podestà nel 1230; Oberto, suo figlio, ebbe la stessa carica nel 1237; Nicolò fu abate del popolo in Genova nel 1299; Simone fu anziano nel 1393 e abate della podesteria di Voltri nel 1395. Un ramo era però passato in Milano ed ivi fregiato del titolo comitale. Da Milano alcuni Ferrari si trasferirono nelle province meridionali, altri in Piemonte. In Piemonte il primo personaggio di cui si ha memoria storica è un Francesco, padre di Ambrogio e nonno di Francesco,
