Alcuni autori sostengono che, questa antica ed illustre famiglia, sia originaria dalla Lombardia e che sia stata portata in Sicilia ai tempi di Pietro I d'Aragona da un Luigi Ferrario, che fu castellano di Piazza. E' noto che un Pietro Ferrario venne, nel 1282, con le regie armate guidando sette uomini, e forse egli stesso era quel Pietro annoverato tra i cavalieri di Aidone e di Patti nel 1283; in quest'ultimo anno tra i cavalieri di Nicosia e di Castrogiovanni troviamo un Filippo Ferrario e, tra i cavalieri di Piazza, un Leonardo Ferrario. Un Gaspare, quale curatore di Giacomo Ferrario, figlio di Marco, da Sciacca, ottenne il 23 genn. 1455 conferma e nuova investitura del feudo Cellaro; un Filippo, da Sciacca, il 23 nov. 1479 venne investito dal feudo Lazzarino; un messer Muzio e un messer Colantonio sono annotati nella mastra nobile del Mollica, 1589, 1697; una Marta acquistò nel
