Diramazione della Casa Ferrari di Cosenza, come da un certificato dei reggimentari di Matera prodotto al S.M.O. di Malta da Giusepe e Nicola Ferrari di Matera nel 1796. In Basilicata, le più antiche memorie di questa famiglia risalgono ad un Giovanni Ferrario, eletto nel 1282 Collettore della Pecunia dell'Università di Saponara. Della famiglia Ferrari, nobile in Saponara, parlano il Pacichelli ed il Limaga, famiglia che nella Basilicata istessa si trova poi in Rivelli, ove nel 1535 risiedevano i baroni di Loquino, in Tursi nel 1544, ed in Tramutola, ove nel 1550 s'era portato un ramo dei Ferrara del Salernitano, baroni di Silvi e Castiglione. Giovan Battista Ferrau, detto lo francioso, regio familiare, che ottenne dal re nel 1485 i beni di Gaspare Donatore confiscati per ribellione, è il primo di questa famiglia di cui si ha notizia a Matera.
