La famiglia Ficarra, de' Baroni del feudo di Ciangiano, è non meno antica, che nobile in Sicilia; il primo, che di lei si ha ritrovato appresso gl'atti di Notar Nicolò di Gregorio, è stato Gualdo la Ficarra uno de' primi Dottori del suo tempo, che per ordine del Rè Federico II nel 1337 diede la possessione de' tenimenti de' terreni di Taia, Gorgulufo ad Ambarda, venduti per Abbo Barrese, à Bernardo d'Amato; costui hebbe per moglie Aliana, figlia di Giovanni Ficarola, la cui famiglia haveva passato in Sicilia in servigio del Rè Pietro d'Aragona nel 1282; il primo, che venne fu Guerao Ficarra, questi si casò con la figlia di Pietro di Catania gentil'huomo di quei tempi, e procreò Giovanni prenarrato c'hebbe per moglie Licandra di Licandro, figlia di Luigi, che fù parimente padre di Nicolò gentil'huomo Messinese.
