Apellido originario de Cataluña. Tuvo antiguo solar en la villa de Montblanc (Tarragona). El ayuntamiento de las Piles, en el partido judicial de Montblanc, pertenece a un lugar denominado F., del que acaso tomara el nombre el linaje, aunque también puede admitirse que el linaje diera nombre al citado lugar. Entre uno y otro hubo, sin duda alguna, estrecha relación, aún cuando no sea posible determinarla concretamente por los confusos datos que se conocen del origen del apellido que nos ocupa. De Cataluña pasó el apellido el maestrazgo (tras de haber asistido algunos de sus primeros caballeros a la conquista de Valencia), creando en Aragón y Valencia ramas de notoria nobleza e hidalguía. Uno de los más antiguos varones del linaje F., de que se tiene noticia cierta, lo menciona mosén Jaime Febrer en sus Trovas.
