La moderna critica storica ha, sulla scorta sicura dei documenti, fatto ragione delle artificiose ricostruzioni genealogiche di quegli scrittori che, per compiacente spirito d'adulazione, pretesero far discendere questa famiglia di Firenze da nobili e antiche prosapie come quella de' Saracini, che avrebbe avuto rappresentanti tra i campioni di Firenze nella battaglia di Montaperti nel 1260. Ed ha, invece, identificato il capostipite di questa famiglia, pur così illustre anche se non d'origini guerriere e magnatizie, in un Puccio, di Benintendi, ricordato come arbitro in due lodi peritali per stime di beni rispettivamente del 1264 e 1287, e che esercitò l'arte del legnaiuolo; i cui discendenti, essendosi sempre mostrati ligi e devoti alla potente famiglia dei medici, ottennero col favore di questa di poter ascriversi alle Arti maggiori, conseguendo così le più altre cariche civiche e grandi ricchezze.
