Un "ser Spigliatus Aldobrandini" si trova investito delle maggiori cariche della Repubblica Fiorentina sin dal 1284, e "Naddus ser Spigliati de Filicaria", suo figlio, ebbe nel 1348 il gonfalonierato di giustizia, come l'ebbero poi Giacomo, di Berto "de Felicaria" nel 1418, Berto, di Francesco, nel 1429, e poi altri ancora di questa stirpe, che dette alla città nativa 65 Priori di Libertà e 12 Gonfalonieri. Alamanno, di Tommaso, fu Senatore, e suo nipote Alessandro fu Cavaliere Generolimitano. Francesco Maria de' Medici (1693), e con i gigli di lui la famiglia si divise inpiù rami: quello di Giovan Battista, che con decreto 23 aprile 1751 ottenne per sè e pel fratello Carlo Gaetano la ascrizione al Patriziato Fiorentino, ed ebbe, oltre sei femmine, un solo figlio maschio, Alamanno Giuseppe (1760-1825): e quello di Tommaso (morto 1766), che si estinse nelle due figlie di Pietro Francesco (morto 1804): Elisabetta Maria (morto 1835)
